Dr. Soumen Karmakar is a Consultant Psychiatrist from Kolkata. Originally from Murshidabad, he is an alumnus of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math. He completed both his Undergraduate & Postgraduate Medical education from the prestigious Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata, affiliated to The West Bengal University of Health Sciences. He served as a House Physician in the Department of Cardiology in his mother institute after M.B.B.S.

During his M.D. in Psychiatry, he gained vast experience from working at the largest State-run Mental Hospital of West Bengal  – the Calcutta Pavlov Hospital (which is the 2^nd Campus of Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital and a Centre of Excellence). His dissertation topic was on Cognitive functioning of Psychiatric patients.

Dr. Karmakar has presented research papers as well as been speakers in State and National level Conferences. He has several publications to his name in International and National Journals. He also serves as a reviewer for some of the most prestigious journals in the field including BJPsych Open, Scientific Reports etc. to name a few. You can find more details about these here.

Teaching has been a passion for him; he has taken Classes for M.B.B.S. students regularly during his Residency. He has taught courses for Psychological Counselling. Dr. Soumen has been engaged in Training of Medical officers & Community Health Officers on various topics of Mental Disorders. He has been part of several Gatekeeper Training Programmes on Mental Health. He has also delivered lectures for West Bengal Commission for Women.

He was attached to Spastics and Handicapped Society (CNCP Home) at Rampurhat, West Bengal as a visiting Psychiatrist.

His areas of interest are Psychopharmacology, Forensic Psychiatry, and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
